Safety classes under EN ISO 20345 (and the Malaysian SIRIM MS ISO 20345) bundle protections into named levels, which is what site requirements reference. The mapping is mechanical once you have your hazard list:
- Toe risk only → SB or S1
- Toe + puncture risk → SBP or S1P (the Malaysian construction staple)
- Toe + wet-area hygiene, no puncture risk → S2
- Toe + puncture + water/outdoor ground → S3
- Standing water, washdowns, plantations → S5/S7L rubber boots

Step 3: Pick the Toe Cap Material
Steel and composite caps pass the identical 200-joule test, so this is a trade-off decision, not a protection decision. Steel is cheaper and thinner; composite is lighter, doesn't conduct heat or cold, and — in fully metal-free builds — passes metal detectors.
