One Ladder, Two Questions
EN ISO 20345 classes stack features in a ladder: S1 gives you the certified toe cap, anti-static soles, an energy-absorbing heel and oil-resistant outsole. S1P adds a penetration-resistant midsole against nails and debris underfoot. S3 then adds a water-resistant upper and a cleated outsole that grips soft or muddy ground. So choosing between S1/S1P and S3 comes down to two questions about the ground, not the job title. Is there puncture risk underfoot? Nails, offcuts, wire and debris mean you need the P — S1P minimum. Is the ground wet or unpaved?Rain-exposed sites, wet concrete, mud and drainage work mean S3's water-resistant upper and cleated sole stop being nice-to-have and become the spec.
Answer "no" to both and S1 keeps your team in lighter, cooler, cheaper footwear — a real benefit over a Malaysian shift in a non-air-conditioned plant. Answer "yes" to both and S3 is the honest requirement; buying S1 to save money just moves the cost to the first rainy month.

What does S1 mean on safety shoes?

What does S3 mean on safety shoes?

Is S3 always better than S1?

It's more protective, not automatically better. S3 shoes are heavier, warmer and cost more. For dry indoor work — assembly lines, warehouses, workshops — S1/S1P delivers the required protection with less fatigue. Specify S3 when water, mud or outdoor terrain are actually present.
